The Musicians
Luiz Barroso
Luiz André Barroso was born in Rio de Janeiro and started playing the acoustic guitar at such a young age that he doesn't recall life before it. Despite the early start, his music career experienced a thirty-year detour when he moved to California to pursue a PhD in Computer Science and a subsequent career as an engineer and executive in Silicon Valley. He learned early Brazilian Sambas and Bossas from his father but had no formal music education until he started studying jazz guitar with Scott Sorkin in 2015. He has accompanied his wife, singer and songwriter Catherine Warner, and this is his first album release.
Sergio Reze
Sergio Reze is one of the most respected drummers in Brazil, with over 100 recordings alongside some of the most important names in Brazilian music, such as Chico Buarque, Ivan Lins, João Bosco, Hamilton de Holanda, and Milton Nascimento. He has had a long and productive collaboration with singer Ná Ozzetti, and jazz pianist André Mehmari. With them and others he has performed across the world. Sergio started his drum studies in São Paulo with Zé Eduardo Nazario. He then moved to the US where he graduated from the Musicians Institute of Technology in California, and later studied at the Murray Spivack Percussion Studio.
Zeca Assumpção
Zeca Assumpção is a bassist, composer and arranger. He is a living legend of Brazilian instrumental music, having toured and recorded with a pantheon of artists including Caetano Vellozo, Gal Costa, Elis Regina, Michel Legrand, Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, John Scofield, Adriana Calcanhoto, Benny Carter, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Dorival Caymmi. Zeca has also composed musical scores for film and dance pieces. His two-decade collaboration with Egberto Gismonti resulted in some of the most iconic Brazilian jazz recordings, with performances all over the world. He studied music, composition and arrangement at the Berklee College of Music.
